Scaling from Zero to Hero: Cloudflare Workers as your only backend

By Dylan Johnston

Serverless has been around for a long time, but only recently has multi-client realtime communication with websockets become not only feasible, but easy and cost effective. In this talk we'll explore how to leverage Cloudflare's edge compute infrastructure like Workers, Durable Objects, and Hibernatable Web Sockets API that make it easier than ever to build rich real-time applications like chat-rooms or multiplayer games that will cost you nothing until you've scaled to tens of thousands of monthly active users. No more paying for idle I/O time! Dylan will share his experience building a real-time multiplayer party game with Cloudflare Workers as its only backend. With some Rust and Web Assembly thrown in for good measure.

About Dylan

Dylan likes long walks on the beach and taking things apart to see how they work. He started programming in school by modding video games and then got addicted to building things that other people could use. Dylan has worked with consultancies and product companies on highly scalable systems and is currently exploring game development with modern backend architectures.
