TELEMIDI

By Matt Bray

TELEMIDI is the process of sharing music performance data over the Internet to enable the real-time co-creation of music between two or more remote collaborators. Matt Bray is a PhD candidate at WAAPA (ECU) nearing the completion of his research, and will use video artefacts to demonstrate the TELEMIDI process and to explain approaches to overcome network latency within a musical performance environment

About Matt

Matt Bray has operated as a professional musician (drummer, singer, guitarist, MIDI performer) since 1996 playing over 3,300 gigs, composing over 170 musical pieces (listed with APRA) including a piece performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and an Australian top 40 album and top 20 single. Using MIDI technologies in live environments since 1998, Matt has developed a range of methods for incorporating sample and synth based performance/composition in live performance.
In 2017 Matt completed a Masters research demonstrating TELEMIDI: how MIDI data exchanged over the internet allows for remote musicians to perform with each other in real-time. Currently completing a PhD at the WAAPA (ECU), Matt is researching further measures to reduce the obstruction of network latency, to increase Telepresence between performers and to harness latency artefacts to deliver ambisonics. Matt is also investigating pathways to present these performances to audiences within virtual environments.
